This week we wanted to feature one of our very own, Mason Woodward. Mason is a member of our amazing Sales team however outside of the work place he is an incredible CrossFit athlete that recently qualified for the CrossFit Games Quarter Finals! We were curious on what it takes to get to such an elite level in the sport so we asked him a couple of questions.

Hey Mason, could you tell us a little bit about yourself?

My name is Mason Woodward. I am a husband, father, athlete, who loves fitness and good food. Ever since being done with my college football career I knew I needed something to fill that void for the competitor in me and that’s when I stumbled across CrossFit.

How did you get into CrossFit?
I wanted something to continue to compete in. If I’m being honest, I loved working out more than football. When I found out that you could workout as a sport, I thought that was the perfect fit.

What keeps you motivated to keep training every day?
I ALWAYS have a goal. With CrossFit there are a multiplicity of movements and skills you need to be good at. Filling in those gaps, and never being satisfied with my results is what keeps me going. I love the chase!

Do you have any advice for building mental toughness when training? Do you have a mantra that you use?
I recently started reading a book a mentor of mine gave me that said “Passion is sacred suffering.” In terms of mental toughness, when you’re passionate about something, you’ll be willing to suffer for it. If you are not willing to suffer for what you want, you probably don’t want it bad enough.

How do you juggle training, family, and work?
It’s kind of tough but my wife is very supportive. I love getting up early! I don’t know why, I just do. I love getting an early start to my day. Everyday that I train, I wake up at 4:15 and train for about 2.5-3 hours. That way I have the rest of the day to work and spend time with family. I don’t believe everyone has to do that, that’s just what works for me.

Do you have any advice for someone just starting a CrossFit or a workout program?
I always say start with gratitude. You have to start somewhere. It’s absolutely ridiculous to compare yourself to someone who’s been at it for years (I’ve been guilty of this). Just be grateful you are starting and build from there. My mantra is “little by little” because your health and fitness is a marathon, not a sprint. As you create good habits overtime, the results will come.

What are some of your goals for the near future?
I’ve been doing CrossFit for 2 years now and have made it to Quarterfinals twice. My goal in the next couple years is to make it to Semi-finals while still balancing work and other projects. I believe as I fill in some holes where i'm lacking, I can do it. It just takes patience and consistency.
