What To Do When Motivation Fades

At some point during the year, most of us feel highly motivated. We’re going to hit the gym, eat healthier, or drink a gallon of water a day. It’s “New me” energy. It’s “This is my year.”

But then motivation fades.

Life gets busy. You get sick. Your schedule shifts. Stress increases. Seasonal changes hit. Routines fall apart.

The dictionary defines motivation as the general desire or willingness to do something. Motivation is powerful – it can push us to accomplish things we never thought possible. But the reality is that motivation is fleeting. That desire and willingness naturally rise and fall over time.

So what do we do when motivation fades? This is where discipline comes in.

The dictionary defines discipline as training by instruction and practice. Discipline is the process of building habits – and most of us are creatures of habit. Research suggests it takes about 21 days to begin forming a habit and around 66 days for behavior to feel automatic.

This is the key to long-term success.

If you can stay disciplined for just three weeks, you can go much farther than motivation alone will ever take you. Motivation may get you started, but on the days it disappears, your habits and discipline are what carry you through.

If you’ve fallen behind on your goals, don’t give up. You still have time. Progress isn’t about perfection – it’s about consistency.

We challenge you to commit to one small habit for three weeks. Stay disciplined. You’ll be amazed how natural it begins to feel.
