How Does Hydration Work?

HydroJug is by far the best way to stay hydrated. Whether you’re an athlete or working at a desk all day, it’s a dependable and stylish way to drink water – so staying consistent feels effortless.

From a young age we are all taught that drinking water is important for us and that staying hydrated is an important part of our health. But why do we need to hydrate and how does hydration work?

Why do we need to hydrate?

Water helps keep your body functioning properly. It supports things like temperature regulation, nutrient transport, and flushing out waste – basically, it’s involved in a lot more than we give it credit for.

Because your body relies on water to keep all of these systems running smoothly, it’s important to keep replenishing what you lose throughout the day.

How does hydration work?

Your body loses water through four main ways: breath, sweat, urine, and feces (plus things like saliva and tears). In order to replenish what’s lost, you take in fluids and also get water from foods you eat.

Our bodies are made up of a large percentage of water, and your body is constantly regulating your fluid balance. When you lose enough fluid, your body sends a signal – thirst – to help you correct it.

If it’s a hot day and you lose a lot of water quickly, you might feel off (headache, fatigue, lightheaded). That’s your body’s way of telling you it’s time to catch up on fluids – slow and steady usually wins here.

When you exercise, you lose both water and electrolytes in sweat. For longer or extra-sweaty sessions, adding electrolytes can be helpful – especially if you’re training hard or it’s hot outside. If you’re training regularly, having a quick-sip bottle on hand helps a lot –our Sport Bottle is a solid workout pick.

Can you get hydrated from drinking beverages other than water?

Although water is the go-to for hydration, it’s not the only way to contribute to your daily fluids. Milk and water-rich foods can also help support your intake.

Sodas and juices can add fluid too, but they often come with extra sugar – so they’re best in moderation. If you’re getting tired of plain water, try adding fruit or herbs to make it more fun. Check out our Water Recipes page for ideas!

How much water do I need to hydrate?

The amount of water needed to stay hydrated varies from person to person. Your age, size, activity level, and climate all play a role.

HydroJug is the best water bottle to help you stay consistent. With multiple sizes, colors, and styles, you can personalize your bottle to fit your routine – so hydration becomes something you actually keep up with.
